Things are looking promising for the cattle industry in 2015, which should mean good bids during the annual M.C. Quantock bull sale.
The sale has been held in Lloydminster since 1969 by the family of Mac Creech who is expecting a big crowd for this year’s gathering of cattlemen thanks to good financial times in the industry.
“The cattle industry in Canada went through ten pretty tough years from the discovery of the mad cow disease in 2003,” Creech said. “It caused a lot of economic loss, a lot of people left the business so in the last three or four years it’s been getting better and better again so we are seeing more and more people. Our business is pretty stable and we deal with mostly cattlemen that are long-term cattlemen that have always been in the business.”
This year there will be 375 bulls up for bidding. Last year’s sale prices averaged $4,600, a price Creech expects to see modestly increase this year.
